"Cass"

1935 - 2020

Catherine F. (Johnston) Lavan, 84, affectionately known as “Cass”, of Drexel Hill, PA and Mystic Island, NJ passed away peacefully at home in the presence of her family on June 17, 2020.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Cass is a graduate of West Catholic Girls High School. She was a Navy wife who lived in many states and abroad until settling down in Drexel Hill with her family. She worked for over 26 years at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, retiring as the Building Administrator.

Cass had a kind spirit and a giving heart.  She was selfless, caring and full of love.  Family meant the world to her. Her quick wit was the source of many laughs and good times had by all.

Cass enjoyed spending time with her family on the beach and by the lagoon, and meeting with her friends at McDonald’s. Traveling the world, reading, and cheering on the Eagles were her favorite past times.

Cass is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph D. and Catherine F. (Flynn) Johnston, and beloved brothers, Joseph, John, and Robert, and sister, Isabelle.

Her memory will be cherished and kept in the hearts of her devoted husband of 61 years, Thomas J., Sr.; her loving children, Catherine, Maureen (Ronald Nowaczyk), Thomas J., II, and Joseph (Michele); and her adored grandchildren, Danielle and Brianna Lavan, and Jake Nowaczyk. Also survived by sisters-in-law Maureen, Judy, and Mary Johnston; and dear friends Herb Yorgey, James Chadwick, Gloria Watts, and Jeanne Grace. She will forever be remembered for her love of family and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Special thanks to Main Line Homecare & Hospice for their care and comfort, including Tom Olejniczak, Joanne Ramsey, and especially, Margie Garwood, for her many years of tender care and support.

Cass’ life will be celebrated with a visitation on Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernadette of Lourdes Church, 1035 Turner Avenue, Drexel Hill, PA, 19026.  Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in her name to Main Line Homecare & Hospice, 240 North Radnor Chester Rd, Suite 100, Radnor, PA 19087 484.596.5638.
