ALFRED FRANKLIN BEERS

January 24, 1935 – July 8, 2022

Alfred Franklin Beers, C.P.A of Springfield Pennsylvania passed peacefully at Sterling Healthcare and Rehab Center in Media on July 8, 2022 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.  He was 87.  Born January 24, 1935 in East Stroudsburg, PA, the only child of Stanley S. and Anna Mae (née Hahn) Beers, young (and very tall) Alfred grew up on Fulton Street in Allentown PA and graduated from William Allen High School. After a 3 year enlistment in the US Army, Sergeant Beers then enrolled at Muhlenberg College graduating in May 1960 with a degree in accounting.  It was during college that he met and married his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Ann (née Shovlin) Beers in January of 1959.  After graduation, Mr. Beers, his wife, and newborn son then moved to Drexel Hill, PA where he spent 6 years in public accounting working in the audit department of Peat, Marwick, and Mitchell (KPMG) in Philadelphia earning his designation as a Certified Public Accountant.

In 1966 Mr. Beers then left KPMG and embarked on a long career in academic financial administration at the University of Pennsylvania. Beginning as the Assistant Business Manager in the Department of Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Beers rose through the ranks of the University administration and after a series of increasingly responsible positions that included Business Manager for the School of Medicine, he became the University Comptroller in 1982.  In 1997, he was named Associate Vice President for Finance, a post he held until his retirement in 2000, an occasion marked by a resolution of appreciation from the University Board of Trustees.  While at PENN Mr. Beers received local and national recognition for his work including membership in the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Society of Research Administrators, past chairman of the Costing Policies Committee of the Council on Governmental Relations, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Financial Officers Board of the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC).

Mr. Beers was an avid recreational vehicle (RV) enthusiast beginning with the acquisition of a used 16 foot tow behind camper in 1973.  He was an active member of the Keystone Winnies RV club and along with his co-pilot Dorothy, succeeded in touring 49 states and all 10 Canadian Provinces well into his retirement years.

Mr. Beers is survived by his wife Dorothy, four children Michael, Karl, Denise Prentice, and Jennifer Newlands, 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.  Friends may call at St. Dorothy’s Church in Drexel Hill on July 23 from 9:00-10:15 AM and share in a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10:30 AM.  Interment will follow at the Cemetery of Sts Peter and Paul in Springfield PA. We respectfully request the use of masks in the church.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association
