Age 79, of Philadelphia, PA passed away peacefully on August 8, 2023. Barbara, the eldest of four children, was born September 27, 1944 in Mt Pleasant, PA, to Harold and Betty Queer. After Barbara graduated from North Hills High School of Pittsburgh, PA, in 1962, she went on to study at Penn State University. She graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor’s of Science, Consumer Services in Business, degree and remained a loyal Nittany Lion throughout her life. After graduation, Barbara began a career in retail which included working as a fabric buyer and then a sportswear buyer for Strawbridge and Clothier Department Stores.
She married her soulmate Thomas Rittenhouse in 1977 and they were happily married for 35 years until his death in 2012. Together they traveled the world and enjoyed spending time at their home in Cape May, NJ. Barbara was a pillar of the community and volunteered her time to numerous boards and organizations including Old Pine Church, Cosmopolitan Club, Union League, the Philadelphia Flower Show, the Woman’s Group at Penn Museum and the Historic Rittenhouse Town Board. In addition, she served on the Presbyterian Board and was charged with overseeing Presbyterian Retirement Communities and taught high school equivalence to inmates in the Pennsylvania prison system.
Barbara was predeceased by her grandson Ryan Rittenhouse and is survived by her beloved cat Reisey, her brothers David Quist, Thomas Queer and George Quintin, her brother-in-law Drake Rittenhouse, her stepsons Jeffery and Gregory Rittenhouse along with her granddaughter Olivia, her four nieces, two nephews, four grandnieces and five grandnephews.
The services will be held at Old Pine Church 412 Pine St. Philadelphia on September 16, 2023 at 10:30AM.
