Edward T. Hughes, Sr.
1943 - 2023
Edward T. (Ed) Hughes, Sr. age 80, of Cape May Court House, N.J., formerly of Southwest Philadelphia died peacefully at home on September 23, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas J. and Anna Marie (nee Quinn) Hughes and sisters Diane Spicer and Anna Marie Hughes. Ed is survived by his beloved wife Marty Hughes (nee Lawson), their loving sons Edward T. (MaryEllen) Hughes Jr., Michael (Melissa) Hughes, and Mark (Stephanie) Hughes, eight grandchildren; Patrick, Michael, Justin, Sean, Erika, Ryan, Nolan, and Audrey. Ed is also survived by his brother Thomas, many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, his law enforcement colleagues, other family and friends.
Ed was a graduate of Most Blessed Sacrament Class of 1957 and West Catholic High School for Boys Class of 1961.
Ed spent 50 years in law enforcement, with much of that time as a Philadelphia Homicide Detective at Philadelphia Police Headquarters, the Round House, where he received numerous citations and awards for solving notable murder cases. He also mentored many current Philadelphia Law Enforcement.
Ed’s passions were his family, helping others, golf, playing the lottery, iced tea, and the local news – and maybe not in that order if a golf tournament was being televised or the Action News opening music was heard. He was married to his forever sweetheart, Marty, for 57 years. His love for Marty was evident to everyone who knew them and was something to admire. In that time, they raised a family of three boys, welcomed three daughters-in-law, celebrated eight grandchildren, and welcomed two granddaughters-in-law. He was most proud of the academic and professional successes of his family. Ed never missed attending his three sons, grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews’ sporting, dance and school events. He was never too busy with life to ensure practices were made, games were attended, players were cheered for, and events were never missed. Many soccer fields, baseball fields, ice hockey rinks, basketball courts, dance recitals, and award ceremonies were frequented by Ed – sometimes he was the most passionate supporter win or lose. He also loved getting together to celebrate with his extended family (in-laws, many cousins, and police family) where stories and jokes would be told and retold with a toast or two. Throughout his life, Ed could be found teeing off on various fairways throughout the world with his most memorable rounds being at Merion Golf Club, Pine Valley, Waterville Golf Links in Co. Kerry, Ireland, and Old Head Golf Links Kinsale, Co. Cork, Ireland.
