Isabel Agnes Largoza

AN EDUCATOR

Isabel’s life calling and desire was to be an educator.  After graduating at Quezon Memorial High School in Lucena City, Philippines, she started at the Philippine Normal College where she obtained her degree in Education.  She pursued her Master’s degree in Education at the University of the Philippines.  Upon arriving in the USA, she enrolled at Temple University in Philadelphia to further her proficiency in academia.   Overall, she has a total of sixty years of teaching experience. Her first eighteen years in the education arena transpired while in the Philippines where she made a concrete contribution to the scholastic field. Her background in educational experiment in college helped her immensely.

Upon arrival to the USA, she qualified in the National Teachers’ Certification and the School District of Philadelphia examination. She was hired immediately by the School District of Philadelphia.  She taught and cared for thousands of students during her twenty-two years of teaching in the Philadelphia Public School system.

Isabel happily states that her success is pegged to the application of her Filipino culture and values.   She brought these inherent values to her approach in teaching, to discipline with love and concern.  She worked with children at their own level.  This way, she insists, that each child can reach his or her potential.   With this in mind, she reflects and proudly reiterates that she did not meet any problems in discipline that made her enjoy each year in her profession.

AS A WIFE AND MOTHER

Isabel married her high school sweetheart after graduating from high school.  By the time they married, Nenar was already a practicing physician and she was a schoolteacher.  They had four children, Nonie (married to Dr. Eva Marie Zaldivar) of Fairfield, CA, Venjie (married to Dr. Vicky Labao) of Drexel Hill, PA, Cheno (married to Dr. Candy Nunez)of San Antonio, TX and Miel (married to John Ania) of Southampton, NY.  Their family emigrated to the USA and settled in the Philadelphia area, where they assimilated seamlessly into a new culture while retaining the values of the old world.

She rejoiced at being a grandmother to her 9 grandchildren that she help raised.  They are adults now: Dr. Rion Largoza, Dr. Zachary Largoza, Dr. Brandon Largoza, Dr. Garrett Largoza, Gabrielle Largoza (PhD Candidate), Caroline Largoza (Pre-Law), Jonathan Largoza (entering Univ of Pennsylvania Biomedical Engineering), Alexis Largoza-Ania (Milan, Italy - Master’s in Art) and Nicholas Ania (Finance).

Isabel was also very active with the following affiliations: Pennsylvania School Employees Retirement System, Filipino-American Association of Philadelphia, Inc., University of Santo Tomas Medical Alumni Association- Auxiliary Group as well as the Veteran of Foreign War-Auxiliary Group.  She was Mother of the Year 1986 Awardee which was an honor given by Filipino-American Association of Philadelphia, Inc.

She was a voracious reader and always had a book in her hand. Her readings led to a love of travel and adventure. She was a world traveler. While she traveled Asia and Europe extensively, Russia and India were her favorites, but the Holy land and the Middle East fascinated her given her deep faith. She has hiked Machu Picchu in Peru, island hopped the Galapagos in Ecuador, fished in Alaska and boated with dolphins in Maui. Just before passing, she spent two weeks with her son Cheno hiking all the national parks in Wyoming, Montana, Washington and Oregon. She wanted to see the world and she did.

A great selfless human being who cared more for others than she did herself.  She was religious individual whose life was devoted in her fervent Belief in God almighty.   She was a blessing to all who knew her.
