James J. Shields, age 86, of Drexel Hill died peacefully January 13, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his parents, the late John and Jeanette (White) Shields, siblings John, Marie, Jule, Jean, Peggy, Pat, and Bunny. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years Maureen (Callaghan) Shields, children James L. (Maureen) Shields, Susan Shields, Kathleen (Christopher) McCann, and Ellen (William) Fitzpatrick. He is also survived by twenty grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren with one on the way. Jim was born and raised in Southwest Philadelphia in Good Shepherd Parish. He attended West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Boys, and then worked at The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as a pipe fitter for several years. Jim attended Evening School at Drexel University while working at the Ship Yard, graduating with a Mechanical Engineering Degree in 1967. Jim accepted an engineering position at Westinghouse in 1969. After 30 years, Jim retired from Westinghouse and became an Engineering Consultant until late 2023. Jim loved going for a run every morning well into his 80’s. He also loved attending all of his children and grandchildrens’ events, especially the sporting events, with his wonderful wife Maureen.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Mass on Friday, 1/19 at 10 AM at St. Bernadette of Lourdes Church (1035 Turner Avenue, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania 19026). Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Wounded Warrior Project in Jim’s honor.
