We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Jesse Wylie Croteau (born March 9, 1995) on September 27, 2021.
Jesse was a loving, loyal son, brother, grandson, and friend, known for his easygoing manner, keen mind, love of music and food, and his ability to make those he loved laugh no matter the circumstance.
Jesse’s love for his family was expressed in many ways. He shared a love of cooking with his mother and grandmother, and was proud to master exotic dishes like double-cooked pork as well as his favorite corn chowder recipes. He spent hours playing video games with his father and brothers; as a teenager, he learned to build computers from the parts with his dad, a talent he later shared by building gaming computers for his little brother or any friend who asked him. His eclectic taste in music was an endless source of road trip entertainment (and if you were lucky, a little off-key singing). He loved finding all sorts of water creatures on his travels, from tadpoles in local ponds to fish, sea turtles, and crabs on family vacations to Ocracoke. He was an expert paddler of canoes and kayaks, having completed a 21-day expedition in the wild waters of Alabama as a young man. He shared many of life’s adventures and hijinks with his older brother, including the day he saved his younger brother from an overly friendly bison in Yellowstone Park. He loved his friends deeply, and was generous with his time and support, always happy to help them in any way he could.
While Jesse fought a long battle against the mental health issues and disease that ultimately took his life, he could never be defined by them.
Jesse is survived by his mother Erica Wehner and stepfather Martin Longman; father Bertrand Croteau, Jr; brothers Randy Croteau and Finn Longman; grandmother M. Orcilla Wylie; uncle Andrew and aunt Julie Wehner, cousins Xander and Sara Wehner; aunt Debra Ferrantino and numerous other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Edmae and Bertrand Croteau, Sr.
Interment will be private, and a celebration of Jesse’s life is planned for October 16, 2021.
