Joan Theresa Mullen
1930 - 2023
Joan Theresa Mullen (nee Carrigan), born October 6, 1930, passed peacefully on August 17, 2023, surrounded by her family. Joan remained the devoted wife of John (Jack) Mullen for 67 years until his passing in 2020. She is survived by her three children, Ann Marie Cook (Philip), Joan Kergides (Constantine) and Jack Mullen (Cindy), 6 grandchildren, Christopher Cook (Amy), Amanda Mease (Matthew), Lauren Cook, Nicholas Kergides, John Mullen, and Ellie Mullen. She is also survived by two great grandchildren, Isabel and Oliver Cook of Marquette, MI. Joan had one sister, Peggy Hirst, who preceded her into heaven and 3 loving nephews, Harvey, Greg, and Michael Hirst of California.
She graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1948 and remained active in their alumni association. Joan and Jack raised their family in Havertown and lived in the same house for 60+ years along with being icons at St. Dorothy’s Church in Drexel Hill. After becoming a mother, she dedicated her time to raising her three children. Once they graduated school, Joan worked for many years in the Real Estate business until her retirement.
She will always be remembered for her kind demeanor and her willingness to open her home to her children’s friends at a moment’s notice. Sunday dinners were always the highlight of the family and expanded over the years to include spouses and grandchildren. You would be hard pressed to find a more devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. Joan and Jack were inseparable and loved spending vacations together, including a few months in Florida every year.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sacred Heart Church in Havertown on Tuesday, August 22nd. Friends and family are invited to the viewing from 9:30-10:30 followed by mass. Everyone is invited to join the family for a lunch to immediately follow at Anthony’s Ristorante in Springfield, PA. (865 Springfield Road). She will be buried alongside her loving husband on August 23rd in a private ceremony.
