Joanne Theresa Somers
1949 - 2022
Joanne T. Somers died peacefully August 20, 2022 at the age of 73 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a beloved sister, cousin, aunt and niece. Joanne was born at Misericordia Hospital, Philadelphia, PA and raised in Southwest Philadelphia. She graduated from Transfiguration of Our Lord elementary school, is a 1967 graduate of West Catholic High School for Girls and earned a bachelor’s degree from Villanova University
While at West Catholic, Joanne played cello in the school orchestra. She also started piano lessons as a young child and enjoyed playing the piano throughout her life, particularly Broadway show tunes. She was also a lifelong fan of the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel. She loved to travel with her friends, both throughout the US and internationally, and was an avid reader of non-fiction books and the New York Times as well as enjoying going to the movies and taking day trips to the shore.
Throughout her adult life Joanne resided in Drexel Hill, PA and worked for General Electric Aerospace for 30 years, where she was a GE advocates member for 27 years, followed by GE Capital for 12 years and PNC Bank for 9 years. Also, reflecting her deep faith Joanne was active in the Catholic church, serving as a lector, eucharistic minister and member of the Rosary Pro-Life group at St. Dorothy’s Church in Drexel Hill. She also was a financial supporter for several Catholic charities
Joanne is the daughter of the late Rosemary L. (nee Joseph) and Joseph V. Somers and is survived by her siblings, Rosemary (Somers) DeNick (Joseph, deceased) and Charles Somers (Valerie, deceased). Joanne is also survived by nieces Joanne Thurston (William, deceased), Kathleen DeNick, Jennifer Watkins (Christian) and Alicia Osborne (Matthew), her dear cousin Rose Anne Leonard as well as numerous other cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her niece Karen VanHerwarden (James) (daughter of Rosemary and the late Joseph DeNick).
Joanne’s pleasant, mild-mannered personality, along with her easy laugh, will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation, Friday August 26th from 9am-10:15am at St. Dorothy’s Church 4910 Township Line Road, Drexel Hill PA 19026 where her funeral Mass will follow at 10:30am. Interment will be at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery 1600 S. Sproul Rd. Springfield PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Holy Annunciation Monastery 408 West County Rd. Sugarloaf, PA 18249 in Joanne’s memory would be appreciated.
