John R. Weaver, 81, of Oxford, passed away suddenly on February 23, 2023. John was born March 26, 1941 in Elk Township to Thornton and Anna (Jackson) Weaver. He was the husband of Sandra Lowe Weaver with whom he shared 42 years of marriage. John attended Oxford Area High School where he formed many lifelong relationships. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a welder by trade and worked on his family dairy farm as a young man.
John was a member of the American Legion, the Oxford Gun Club, and the Eagles Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, old cars and tractors. He spent many hours in his garden in the warmer months and was always tinkering on projects. He was an expert in simple machines and could always find a way to make things work. His greatest joy, though, was spending time with his family and friends. He never met a person that wasn’t a friend. Once you met him, you were friends for life, because he never forgot anyone. His general camaraderie, jokes and shenanigans will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife John is survived by three daughters, Valerie Miller of Quarryville, Melissa (Chris) Lewis of Rising Sun, and Natalie Weaver of Oxford. He leaves behind grandchildren Zachery (Ashley), Zoey, Carley, Nathan, Sammy, Madelyn, Lennox and Oliver; step grandson, Justin (Kristen), and five great grandchildren. He also leaves behind siblings Grace Lusby of Oxford and Bill Weaver of Petersburg West Virginia as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Robert, Richard, and Donald Weaver and Robert Shoff.
John’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the Elsmere VA Medical Center for his care through the years, to the first responders to the accident and to the bystanders, including the Plumpton Park Zoo employees who assisted until Emergency Services arrived. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Plumpton Park Zoo or to the funeral home to offset costs incurred from the accident.
