Richard Irvin Broadwell
1931-2025
Richard Irvin Broadwell, aged 93, died peacefully on January 9, 2025, at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, PA.
Born in Cranford, NJ, to Norton Earl Broadwell and his wife Florence (Geisel) Broadwell, he was raised in Philadelphia, PA, and Plainfield, NJ. He served two years in the US Army at the end of the Korean War; for most of that time he was stationed in Germany as a surveyor with the 756th Field Artillery Battalion. Afterward he made his career with New Jersey's Division of Motor Vehicles (now the Motor Vehicle Commission), rising from working an inspection lane to a senior executive position. He retired in 1991 to enjoy a quiet life with his family: playing chess against the computer, feeding the birds, attending park concerts, watching westerns and classic films, and cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Carolyn (Simon) Broadwell; his children Nancy Elizabeth Broadwell, Stephen Robert Broadwell, and Robert Thomas Broadwell; his daughter-in-law Mildred (Tse) Broadwell; and his grandchildren Elizabeth Broadwell and Samuel Broadwell. He is also mourned by his nephew Richard Kappmeier and his nieces Phyllis (Broadwell) Miterotonda, Linda (Kappmeier) Palitto, and Susan (Kappmeier) Taylor and their families.
Relatives and friends are invited to his memorial service on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 1:30 PM at Ruffenach Funeral Home, 4900 Township Line Road, Drexel Hill, PA, 19026. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Richard's memory to Somebody Cares, Inc. (48 Schoolhouse Rd., Whiting, NJ, 08759) or Delaware County Advocacy & Resource Organization (delcoadvocacy.org).
