Richard J. Maguire

1954 – 2023 

     Richard J. Maguire the son of the late Josephine Lorraine (nee McGreal) and Richard Patrick Maguire and beloved brother of Marie V. Maguire, died peacefully June 16, 2023 after a long illness at the age of 69. He is survived by his three sisters; Marie, Joan and Debra and seven nieces and nephews; Joseph, Jeanne, James, Joanna, Diana, John and Mary.

     Richard grew up in Northeast Philadelphia. He graduated from Archbishop Ryan High School where he was an all-catholic basketball player. He received a bachelor’s degree from Mount St. Mary’s College and a master’s degree in sports management from Temple University. After a stellar basketball career at Mount St. Mary’s where he was named to the all-conference team, he played professional basketball in Rouen, France leading his French league in scoring. After his success in the French league, he tried out for the Kansas City Kings of the NBA. He made the team, but an injury in preseason ended his basketball career prematurely. Mr. Maguire was a sports agent for many years using his connections to place players in the French league. Before retirement, Mr. Maguire had varied career first as a social worker and finally as a salesman for several different products in the Philadelphia area. 

         Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing after 9am Saturday, June 24th  at St. Dorothy Church, 4910 Township Line Road, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania 19026 where his Funeral Mass will follow at 10am. Interment Calvary Cemetery.
