Alice S. Carroll, a resident of Riddle Village, Media, PA for the past six years and previously a 50-year resident of Merion Station, PA, passed away on April 18, 2020 at the age of 97.  She grew up in West Philadelphia as the youngest of four children.  Her oldest sister, Laura, died in a tragic accident at the age of 12.  The children developed close bonds growing up on Beaumont Avenue and, ironically, Alice happily spent her final years at Riddle Village again in the company of her brother Don Shannon and his wife Mary, along with her sister, Eleanor Boisson, in their respective apartments.

Despite the enormous struggles of growing up in the Great Depression, Alice excelled at West Philadelphia High School as a student, athlete, and school leader.  She graduated in January 1941 having achieved numerous awards, medals and citations; among them the prestigious Laureati Award, an emblem of the highest award a student may achieve.

Alice was happily married to Charles Carroll, also from West Philadelphia, shortly after the conclusion of WWII.  They had four children.  Sadly, she became a widow the day after her 27th birthday with her youngest child, Robert, just three and a half months old. Through many trials during her beautiful life, she consistently displayed calm, integrity, cheerfulness and resolve.  Alice was admired and marveled at by many.  She was both serious and fun-loving; focused and calm; firm and loving.  She was totally selfless and showed full respect to everyone.  Alice has been considered by many to be an exemplary role-model and in the words of a cousin, “Alice was Magnificent.”

She worked for many years for the City of Philadelphia in both the Weights and Measures and Sheriff’s Departments.  Most of her working life, however, was in the Trust Department at Provident National Bank (PNC). Upon retirement she continued working part time for the Circle Travel Agency in Narberth, PA.

Alice is survived by her children Michael (Kathy), Anne T., Charles (Anne), and Reverend Monsignor Robert J. Carroll.  She is dearly loved by her seven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. She will also be sadly missed by her many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services and burial will be private.  There will be a future celebration of Alice’s splendid life.

I don't usually post to obituaries, but Alice was a special person. I worked at Provident as a Trust Officer for many years and I remember that smile. The bank in that day was more like family and I have fond memories of Alice and our co-workers. Dick Prinz
