Kathleen Duffy

1919-2020

Kathleen Duffy (nee Murphy), long-time resident of Broomall, PA, passed away peacefully during the night of Wednesday, April 22nd, at Bryn Mawr Hospital, valiantly battling infection of COVID-19.

Born in 1919, before women had the right to vote and during the 1918-1919 Flu Pandemic in Philadelphia, to Irish immigrants and shop-owners, Dennis and Eileen Murphy. Kathleen was fifth of seven tight-knit Murphy children.

Kathleen distinguished herself in adolescence, and throughout her life, with dance. Known to take first place in local competitions in young adulthood, Kathleen’s dancing notoriety often proceeded her well into her final years of life, bringing energy and joy to any room she was in.

Kathleen married Joseph “Abe” Duffy upon his return from service in WWII. The couple lived in Philadelphia and Yeadon, PA where they raised 3 children, and where Kathleen developed deep ties in the community.

Kathleen, known to many as “Kass”, dedicated countless years and resources supporting democratic candidates and initiatives at both local and national levels even serving as Precinct Captain and Inspector for the Democratic Party in her ward.

Widowed in 2003 with the passing of Joe, Kathleen moved to Broomall where she enjoyed taking daily 4-mile walks, spending time with her family, socializing with friends and neighbors, and dancing at weekly concerts at a local venue.

Kathleen is survived by her daughter, Bernadette Battista (Robert), son Michael Duffy, son Dennis Duffy (Delores), grandchildren Bob and Grace Battista, Michael Duffy, Dr. Danielle Duffy MD and pre-deceased by Erin Roe Duffy. Also, a great granddaughter, Haley Cline.  In addition, she is survived by several generations of nieces and nephews who recently gathered with Kathleen to celebrate her 100 years of life.

Kathleen’s gregarious nature, warm heartedness, and zest for life made her known by many and loved by all. In her own words, “I lived a good life.”

Due to local health and safety restrictions, a private service will be held for Kathleen at St Louis Roman Catholic Church. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia as well as a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Memorial gifts may be made in honor of Kathleen to Pennsylvania Young Democrat’s PO Box 11701 Harrisburg, PA 17108 or Community Interfaith Food Pantry, 506 Haws Ave Norristown PA 19401
